Opening day in 1999

The casino opened on November 26, 1999, under the name OLG Slots at Sudbury Downs. It stood on the Sudbury Downs racetrack site in Chelmsford, a community of the City of Greater Sudbury. Its address is 400 Bonin Road, Chelmsford, ON P0M 1L0. From the Sudbury city point, the site lies to the northwest.

For most of its history the casino offered slots only. Live dealers and card tables were not part of the floor in those years. The six live dealer tables were added later, under Gateway, which runs the casino at present.

03

The end of harness racing

October 30, 2013 was the last day of live harness racing at Sudbury Downs. The 2014 season was cancelled. No racing has run on the site since then. Gateway took over the slots at Sudbury Downs in May 2017, after the last race.

The casino is not a racetrack casino at present. Its games are slot machines and live table games. The Sudbury Downs name survives in the history of the site and in the casino's first name, OLG Slots at Sudbury Downs.

04

Who runs the casino

Gateway Casinos & Entertainment runs the casino. In May 2017, Gateway took over day-to-day operation of OLG's North Gaming Bundle. That bundle included the slots at Sudbury Downs. OLG lists the site as "Gateway Casinos - Sudbury", and the casino's own name is Gateway Casinos Sudbury.

Ownership sits one level up from the operator. Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited is majority owned by The Catalyst Capital Group Inc. Guests reach the casino at 705-855-7164 or through the casino's own website. Its pages carry the entry rules in English and French.

05

The floor at present

The floor holds over 400 slot machines and six live tables with real dealers. The tables are 3 Blackjack, 1 Ultimate Texas Hold'em, 1 Mississippi Stud and 1 Four Card Poker. All six were added under Gateway, after years of slots only. Table minimums are not published.

Floor hours run Sunday to Thursday 10 AM to 2 AM, and Friday and Saturday 10 AM to 4 AM. The live tables close earlier than the floor every night. Holiday hours are not published, so a call to the casino is the check. Its website has English and French versions.
